Gas leak in Millville by the Sea

On Wednesday, 2 May 2018, at 1417 hours, your Millville Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to 26000 block of Summerset Boulevard in the Millville by the Sea subdivision for a gas leak. Roxana VFC was also dispatched to assist in the fire event.

The first arriving fire apparatus detected a strong odor of propane gas in the air and had the appropriate utilities respond with urgency. It appeared that construction workers struck an underground utility pipe when utilizing an auger to dig a fence post hole.

The Incident Commander, Lt. Greg Hocker, quickly realized the danger and taking into account the wind velocity had several blocks within this subdivision evacuated for the safety of the residents.

Pump Operator’s Dennis Ayres, John Stephens, and Roxana VFC provided the necessary water required to prevent an explosion. EMS Chief John Watson was also on site if the need necessitated his expertise, or that of his EMS Crews.

Lt. Greg Hocker commanded this situation. A compliment of Fire-Police took up tactical positions throughout Millville by the Sea in case of an explosion and additional evacuations orders from the Incident Commander.

At the time of this report, there were no injuries.
