Paul started his fire service career in 1966, joining the Wheaton Rescue Squad in Montgomery County, Maryland, as a Junior Firefighter. Paul rose through the ranks to become Fire Chief in 1979 and held that position until 2005. In 2009, Paul joined the Cabin John Fire Department until 2014, serving as Deputy Chief. During his tenure in Maryland, Paul was very active in the Maryland State Fireman's Association, serving as its president in 2007 & 2008.
