January 18, 2004
On Sunday night January 18th at 22:23 hrs the Millville Vol. Fire Co., Sussex County Paramedics and Delaware State Police Aviation Division were dispatched to a reported Motor Vehicle Accident with rescue requested on Fred Hudson Rd (Sx 360) east of Ocean View.
E84-1 under the command of 1st Asst. Chief Droney responded within 2 minutes of the dispatch and was advised by Sussex EOC of two patients trapped. B84 arrived on scene first and reported one Priority 4 and another patient that they could not gain access to, due to the entrapment. On E1?s arrival, crews gained access through the trees and thick brush to the overturned vehicle?s driver?s door where the Paladin tool was put into service. A chain saw was also placed in service clearing out a path for rescuers. Once the door was displaced and access could be gained to the driver it was determined that the patient too was also a Priority 4. Extrication was stopped and the scene secured for the DSP FAIR Team. On Rescue 84's arrival their crews established scene lighting and a tool staging area for when the extrication would resume. 84-16 (Droney) released B84 and E84-1 and held the Rescue and Fire Police. Command was transferred to 3rd Asst. Chief Johnson to handle the remainder of the extrication. At the conclusion of the investigation, crews removed all of the surrounding trees and brush giving the extrication team ample space to complete the removals. The State Medical Examiners Office was on scene and took custody of the two occupants bodies.
The incident was placed under control at 00:57hrs with units remaining in service until 01:20hrs.
