August 09, 2004
On Monday August 9th at around 2330hrs the MVFC, Dagsboro VFC and Sussex County Paramedics were dispatched to a reported structure fire on Iron's Lane s/o Old Mill Rd. in Clarksville. E84-2 under the direction of Truck Lt. Kauffman was first to arrive on scene with fire showing from the 2nd floor and roof area of a newly built custom home. E2 laid in with 400' of 5" line down a long lane to the circular drive that encompassed the home in the heavily wooded lot. Lt. Kauffman established the initial command. The initial attack was made from the exterior with a 2-1/2" blitz line. Due to the extreme heat, rapid fire spread and weakness of the roof, no crews were permitted to enter the second floor. Truck84 arrived next and positioned on Iron's Lane. 84-18 (3rd Asst. Chief Johnson) assumed command and placed Kauffman as Operations officer. Command identified a water supply issue and immediately requested a second alarm as well as 2 engines from Sta. 70. 73-15 (Glenn) had Water Supply. The Roxana VFC was requested for a Tanker Assist and the Frankford VFC responded to the scene as the RIT assignment. The fire was placed under control after 40 minutes and all units were held for extensive overhaul work for approximately 2 hours.
The Delaware State Fire Marshal's office is conducting an investigation into the cause of this unfortunate fire. The homeowners were projected to have moved in within a week.
One firefighter was treated and transported for minor injuries.
