The members of the Millville and Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Companies had a busy day at Lord Baltimore Elementary School on Wednesday, October 10, for National Fire Prevention Week. Activities began in the morning with each grade level and culminated in the afternoon with a fire drill and the arrival of Sparky the Fire Prevention Dog. The activity each grade level participated in was as follows: Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten – Tour of the Millville Volunteer Fire Company firehouse and equipment; First Grade – Stop, Drop, and Roll; Second Grade – Smoke house demonstration (this occurred on Wednesday, September 19); Third Grade – Hazard House from the Delaware State Fire School; Fourth Grade – Squirting water from a fire hose at a target; Fifth Grade – Instruction on the use of and practice with a fire extinguisher
At approximately 2 p.m., a fire drill was sounded with equipment from both the Millville and Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Companies responding as if it was an actual alarm. Sparky the Fire Prevention Dog arrived in the bucket on Truck 84 waving to all of the students. The students were ecstatic when Sparky was placed on the ground, he mingled with them shaking hands and giving high 5’s.
On Wednesday, October 17, an awards assembly was held in the Lord Baltimore Elementary gymnasium at 2 p.m. At that time officials from the Millville and Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Companies awarded prizes to the first, second, and third place winners at each grade level in the Fire Prevention Essay and Poster Contest. All first place winners will have their entry submitted to the County level competition. Each first place winner at the County level will then advance to the State level competition.Sat, Nov 23, 2024 03:27
