Millville Volunteer Fire Company modifies Alerting Procedures

Effective October 1, 2024 the Millville Volunteer Fire Company, as part of a trial program, will change the way our volunteer firefighters are notified when they have a call.  The Millville Volunteer Fire Company historically has used the fire siren, pagers, and cell phone technology to alert our volunteers when there is a call for service. 

The fire siren, which has been in service for more than 70 years, will no longer be utilized on calls that are identified by the dispatch center as low acuity, such as automatic fire alarms, smoke detector activations and carbon monoxide detector alarms.

The fire siren will continue to be part of the notification system for calls that are identified by the dispatch center as high acuity, such as structure fires, motor vehicle collisions and gas leaks.  The change is expected to reduce the number of times the fire siren is activate by more than 50%. 

The Millville Volunteer Fire Company is making this change to reduce the times the public is unnecessary inconvenienced by the sound of the fire siren, especially in areas in close proximity to the fire station.    The Millville Volunteer Fire Company hopes to strike a balance between the desire to be good neighbors and our mandate to provide timely and effective emergency services to our community. 

The Millville Volunteer Fire Company would like to remind the public that our volunteer firefighters will still be responding to calls, whether or not the fire siren is activated, and is asking the public to yield the right-of-way as much as possible to assist our members in arriving at the fire station in a timely manner.
