House Fire - Irons Acres

June 28, 2003

On Saturday June 28th, 2003 at 1431hrs the Millville and Dagsboro Vol. Fire Co's along with the Sussex County Paramedics were dispatched to a reported house fire at 22 Hoot Owl lane in the Irons Acres development North of Sx 346. E842 under the command of Rescue Lieutenant RJ Kauffman responded within a minute of dispatch and arrived 4 minutes later with light smoke showing from sides 1/4. E2's crew advanced a 200' 1-3/4 pre-connect into the front of the structure to find light smoke throughout the entire dwelling. The homeowner advised that she had been cooking on the stove when the pan caught fire and extended into the range hood and kitchen cabinets. She had used a kitchen extinguisher before having to evacuate due to the smoke condition. 2nd Assistant Chief Temple assumed command and Lt. Kauffman was sent in as the interior officer. Truck 84 arrived and Fire Capt. Magee and his crew provided PPV ventilation as well as providing an additional crew for overhaul. Upon E84-1's arrival they provided a 5" line for water supply if needed. E73-1's crew assisted with the use of their Thermal Imaging camera and R73 provided an additional PPV fan to clear the residence of smoke. The incident was placed under control at 1444hrs with units remaining on the scene until 1502hrs. The fire was contained to the stove and hood with minor heat damage to the walls and cabinets. There were no injuries. The DSFM's office was contacted for the investigation. Units responding; E84-2, Truck84, E84-1, Rescue84, B84, E73-1, Rescue73, Tanker73, SCEMS Medic 105. Graig Temple, Asst.
