Serious Motor Vehicle Accident - Atlantic Ave. and West Ave. Ocean View

On Tuesday afternoon the MVFC and Sussex County Paramedics were dispatched to a reported MVC on Atlantic Ave. and West Ave. in Ocean View. 84-18 (3rd Asst. Chief Johnson) arrived on scene within minutes, established Command and advised in coming EMS units of one priority 1 unconscious patient trapped in a station wagon. Command requested aviation and due to the passing rain storm in the area both Maryland and Delaware State Police Medivac units were down. A84 arrived on scene and initiated patient care. Eng/Tanker 84-4 arrived with Chief Hammond operating as the Extrication Officer. The vehicle was immediately stabilized and a Holmatro combination tool was placed in service working on the drivers side door and a/b/c posts. Upon Rescue 84's arrival, a second and third rescue tool were placed in service making quick work of the remainder of the roof. The roof was removed completely giving ample access to the patient. The entire extrication took approx 13 minutes and the pt was removed to A84 for ALS transport to an area Trauma facility. The driver of the second vehicle was un-injured and refused transport. Command placed the situation under control with units remaining on scene for clean-up. Traffic Control 70 was called into the scene early to shut down Atlantic Ave (DE26) from the East. Units responding; 84-18, A84, C84, Eng/Tanker 84-4, Rescue 84, SCEMS Medic 105, Traffic Control 70, DSFP, OVPD, BBPD.
