Working Building Fire - Substation Rd

May 04, 2006

On Thursday, May 7 at 1:47 p.m.,the Millville Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched along with the Roxana and Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Companies to a structure fire on Substation Road. Upon arriving at the scene, the firefighters found the Greene Woodworks shop (which builds furniture and cabinets) involved with heavy smoke showing. An attack was made to minimize damage to the front part of the building, which housed the office and showroom. A simultaneous attack was made on the fire in the woodshop portion of the building that was connected to the office and showroom. Due to the rural location of the alarm, additional stations were called to assist for water supply, as well as manpower. There were a total of twelve companies on the scene. Eight tankers and additional pumpers were utilized to maintain an uninterrupted water supply. One hundred fifteen firefighters, fire police, and EMS personnel responded to the alarm. A rehab station was established at the scene to monitor the status of the firefighters. Three firefighters sustained minor injuries with all being treated at the scene. The owners of Greene Woodworks stated that one of their two dogs perished in the fire. Fire Marshals on the scene estimated the damage to be approximately $500,000.
