Working Smoke Detector Saves Family! - 30 Block of Central Avenue, Ocean View

An Ocean View family is alive today due to a working smoke detector! At 2:08 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, the Millville, Bethany Beach, and Roxana Volunteer Fire Companies were dispatched along with the Sussex County Paramedics to a structure fire with smoke reported in the attic area at the 30 block of Central Avenue in Ocean View. The responders arrived to an older two-story dwelling with smoke in the second story area. All family members were safely out of the house after being alerted by a working smoke detector. Crews entered from the front and side of the dwelling, working their way to the second floor and attic areas to focus on the source of the smoke. The fire was located in the ceiling of a second story bedroom and was quickly extinguished confining it to this area. During the process of overhaul, the firefighters were able to see there was fire centered around some electrical wiring in the ceiling. Millville Rescue Captain R.C. Evans, Jr. established Command for the incident and declared the fire under control at 2:43 a.m. Additional positions assigned by Rescue Captain R.C. Evans, Jr. during the alarm were: Operations-Shawn Evans, Millville Chief; Division 2-Doug Scott, Millville Deputy Chief; Accountability-Shane Truitt, Bethany Beach Assistant Chief; Safety Officer-Harold Lloyd, Millville Safety Officer; Water Supply-Jack Melson, Millville Chief Engineer; Manpower Pool-Guy Hudson, Roxana Assistant Chief; Rehab-Sussex County EMS and Bethany Beach Ambulance Crew. The Roxana Fire Company was assigned the RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) team. The Dagsboro, Rehoboth and Ocean City Fire Companies also provided assistance during the alarm. No injuries were reported. Millville Rescue Captain R.C. Evans, Jr. turned the scene over to the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office for investigation to determine the cause of the fire. “DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS PROUDLY SERVING OUR COMMUNITY”
