At 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 22, the Millville, Frankford, Dagsboro, and Bethany Beach Fire Companies were dispatched along with the Sussex County Paramedics to a working structure fire in the 32000 block of  Tranquility Lane in the Hidden Acres development.  The responders arrived to a trailer with heavy fire showing.  Millville Volunteer Fire Company Assistant Chief Cody Lockwood assumed the Incident Commander position and initiated an attack on the dwelling to suppress the fire with two 1-3/4 inch lines.  All occupants, four adults and three children ages 2, 3, & 4, were already out of the dwelling and accounted for.  Three dogs perished in the fire.  There were no working smoke alarms in the trailer.  The occupants were fortunate that one of the adults woke up and smelled smoke, which allowed everyone to escape from the fire and survive.  Assistant Chief Lockwood filled the following command positions as additional responders arrived on the scene: Accountability - Bethany Beach Fire Chief Brian Martin; Interior - Millville Fire Chief Doug Scott; Manpower Pool - Frankford Fire Chief Hunter Holland; RIT Team - Dagsboro Deputy Chief  John Marvel; Water Supply - Millville Chief Engineer Bob Steffens; and Rehab - Sussex County Paramedics.  Millville Assistant Chief Cody Lockwood declared the scene under control at 4:03 a.m. and turned the scene over to the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office for investigation.  The Roxana and Millsboro Volunteer Fire Companies provided additional assistance during the alarm.

Units and apparatus responding to the alarm were: Millville - Engines 84-1, 84-4, 84-6, Rescue 84 & Ambulance A-84; Frankford - Command Unit, Engine 76-1 & Engine Tanker 76-2; Dagsboro - Engines 73-1, 73- 3, & Tanker 73; Bethany Beach - Command Unit & Ladder 70; Medic 105; Roxana - Engine 90-1; Millsboro - Engine 83-1; and the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office.

Once again the Millville Volunteer Fire Company would like to remind all residents in our community for the need to protect themselves by having working smoke detectors in their residence.  If any resident needs a smoke detector or a replacement battery for a detector in their residence, the individual should call the Millville Volunteer Fire Company at 539-9535 or 539-7557, and we will be glad to supply the detector and/or battery.  Fortunately, human lives were saved in this incident, but the pets did not survive.
