At 1123 hours on Tuesday, August 19, the Millville, Bethany Beach and Roxana Volunteer Fire Companies were dispatched to a structure fire in the Bethany Meadows development in the vicinity of Clover Lane and Hemlock Drive. Bethany's Command unit 70-8 arrived first on the scene with Assistant Chief Tom Moore assuming command. The firefighters found a 1-story wood frame residential structure with what appeared to be an extinguished fire on side C of the structure. Millville Assistant Chief Cody Lockwood arrived shortly after and assumed the Operations position within the ICS. Engine 84-4 arrived on scene with Captain Craig Temple and assumed the 1st due engine assignment of advancing a 1 3/4" hand line into service for fire suppression. Quint 70-4 arrived and assumed the first due truck company. They performed the primary search of the residence which was found to be negative. Engine 84-2 crew assumed the 2nd due engine assignment and secured the water supply along with supporting the first due engine company. Tower 70 assumed the 2nd due truck company, securing the utilities and checking for any extension with Quint 70-4 crew. The fire was contained to the area of origin on the deck, and there was no extension found into the residence itself. Command was transferred from 70-17 to Assistant Chief Lockwood once the fire was under control at 11:44. Assistant Chief Lockwood placed units in service and waited for the Fire Marshall. The scene was turned over to FM 17 at 12:26. Units responding to the alarm were: Sussex County Paramedics, Millville's A-84, 84-4, 84-2, 84-6 & Rescue 84; Bethany Beach's 70-8, C-70, Quint 70-4, Ladder 70; Roxana's Ladder 90 & 90-1, Millville and Bethany Beach Fire Police Units,and the State Fire Marshal's Office.
