On Friday May 5th, 2023 award recipients from the Millville Volunteer Fire Company attended the 2023 Joshua M. Freeman Valor Awards ceremony at Signatures Restaurant in the Bayside Community in Roxana, Delaware. Assistant Chief Mike Melson, FF/EMT Joell Dougherty and FF/EMT Jerry Carter were this year’s nominees from the MVFC by Fire Chief Walter Johnson. Assistant Chief Melson received his nomination for his actions at a serious house fire, providing clear and decisive leadership during the initial operations of the fire. FF/EMT’s Dougherty and Carter were nominated for their participation in several cardiac arrest saves resulting in the patient’s full recovery. In addition, Honorary Member Kenny McLaughlin was nominated by the Ocean View Police Department for his continued progressive leadership of the department. The overall winner of the award Joshua M. Freeman Valor Award was Deputy Chief William Austin Parramore from the Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company for is actions at a house fire resulting in the saving of a family pet. President Greg Hocker, Captain Douglas Scott and Town of Millville Mayor Ronald Belinko, as well as family members of the nominees, were in attendance as well. The Millville VFC would like to congratulate each of this year’s award nominees for their dedicated service to the communities in southeast Sussex County. #millvilledefire
