New Tanker 84 to be Placed in Service

December 25, 2023

PRESS RELEASE: CHRISTMAS DAY 2023 AT 0900 HOURS

The Millville Volunteer Fire Company has waited until this most appropriate day to officially announce the arrival of our new “Tanker 84”.  The MVFC would like to thank the community for all their support and donations that have made this new unit a reality.  In addition, we would like to thank the State of Delaware, Sussex County Council and our local towns of Millville and Ocean View for their continued support of our operations.

Training on the new tanker will take place this week with a projected in service date of Friday December 29th, 2023.

Here is the Official announcement from the MVFC:

The Millville Volunteer Fire Company will be placing in service a 2023 Peterbilt -4 Guys Tanker, the unit will be known as Tanker 84.  The unit replaces a 1991 International – 4 Guys tractor trailer tanker which served our community and our neighboring fire districts for over 33 years.  The old tanker was replaced due to the limited number of drivers capable of driving the tractor trailer unit.

The new tanker is equipped with a Hale QMAX 1500 gpm pump, a Cummins X15 motor with an Allison 4500 EVS-P transmission. The new tanker is built on a 2023 Peterbuilt 367 cab and chassis.  The tanker carries 4000 gallons of water and is equipped with two side and one rear quick dumps.

In addition, the MVFC opted to carry a 3000 gallon rectangular portable water tank to aid with water shuttle operations.  A Zico mechanical lift system was installed to assist with placing the portable tank in service during water supply operations.  This portable tank is among one of the first portable tanks in the area, with the exception of the Selbyville VFC, and was purchased anticipating a shift to portable tank water supply operations in the future.

The lettering and graphics were completed at Patriot Fire in Grasonville, Maryland by Fitch Graphics and Design.  The equipment and tool mounting were completed by Baam Hook and Hose Fire Equipment in Southern Maryland.

The new tanker will operate out of Fire Station #2 on Omar Road which services a mostly non-hydranted area and is the closest station to most of our rural mutual aid response areas.

The Millville VFC would like to thank the committee which included Chairman Dave Carr, Chief Engineer Jack Melson, Assistant Chief Mike Melson, Engineer Johnny Stephens, Engineer Dennis Ayres, Engineer Randy Powell and Firefighter Clayton West.  Chief Walter Johnson stated, “Thank you to all the committee members who have worked on this project and have sacrificed long hours to get this exceptional piece of apparatus in service, we appreciate all your hard work getting this done”.
