71st Annual Ladies Night Banquet

On Saturday evening January 13th, 2024 the Millville Volunteer Fire Company held its 71st Annual “Ladies Night” Banquet.  The banquet was held at the Roxana Volunteer Fire Company.  A delicious three course meal was prepared by the members of the Roxana VFC Auxiliary and we cannot thank them enough for their hospitality!

The invocation was presented by Pastor A.J. Moore followed by a moment of silence for last years deceased members; Jean Shinter, Edith West, Roy E. Rickards, and Ronald J. Dickerson Sr.

After dinner length of service awards were presented. 

The Auxiliary presented a:

5-year award to Valerie Edwards

10-year award to Joyce Poole

15-year award to LaVerne Mack

20-year award to Tracy Townsend

25-year award to Trudi Lombardi

40-year award to Judy Powell

And Recognized Janice Robinson for 57 years of dedicated service

The MVFC presented a:

5-year award to Kolby Evans and Michael Voeltner

10-year award to Jay Droney, Kenneth Coyle, and Hunter West

20-year award to Drake Burd (Lifetime Membership)

40-year award to John Justice, Guy Rickards, and Rodman West

45-year award to Douglas Scott

60-year award to Johnny Stephens

Lifetime Active Member Johnny Stephens was also presented with a Tribute from the State of Delaware Senate and House of Representatives.  Senator Gerald Hocker and Representative Ron Gray were in attendance to present the tributes and congratulate Mr. Stephens on 60 active and dedicated years of service to the MVFC.

The auxiliary presented the MVFC with a very generous gift of Dewalt battery operated tools for the fire apparatus purchased at Bakers Hardware in Millsboro, Delaware.

The Top Ten Responders were announced and recognized by Fire Chief Walter Johnson:

Johnny Stephens 468, Bill Bowden Sr. 440, Walter Johnson 334, A.J. Moore 332, Asher Hammond 329, Jack Melson 316, Bob Rausch 256, Earl Green 254, Frank Rickards 221, and Max Stong 192.  Honorable mentions: Craig Temple 182, Greg Tietmeyer 180, Dennis Ayres 177, and Chayce Neal 150.

The following annual awards were then presented by Fire Chief Walter Johnson, President Gregory Hocker, EMS Chief Jack Wilson, and the Board of Directors:

President’s Award: Paul Sterling.

Chief’s Award: Asher Hammond.

Junior Firefighter of the Year, Junior Top Responder, and Junior Top Trainee: Chayce Neal.

Ralph L. Banks Sr. Training Award: A.J. Moore.

Ralph Burbage EMS Award: Tyler Hickman.

William J. Quillen Member of the Year: Bill Bowden Sr.

Raymond E. Powell/Louis B. Evans Firefighter of the Year: Max Stong.

EMS Chief Jack Wilson recognized the contributions of the career staff and presented gifts from the MVFC to Glenn Johnson Jr. and Keith Baker Sr. on their medical retirements.

Chief Johnson gave and eloquent speech in which he stated; “This year our focus is simple; to work hard on recruitment and retention to ensure we have the future in place for our department.  To provide the best EMS care that we can to our residents and visitors.  To protect this community and to make sure we all go home at the end of the day.  It takes everyone in this room to make things successful and operate”.

Mr. Johnny Stephens entertained the attendees with some light humor.  Mr. Greg Tietmeyer presented the Benediction.  Entertainment for the evening was under the direction of DJ Hype.

We would like to thank the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company for standing by and providing coverage so our members could attend our annual banquet, it is very much appreciated!
