The Millville Volunteer Fire Company has taken and continues to take the racial incident reported on April 16, 2025, very seriously. As noted in our press release, we promised to review our policies and make appropriate adjustments. After an internal review and seeking counsel from outside experts, we have updated our policies and consolidated them into a single Anti-Discrimination and Harassment Policy. Per our bylaws and constitution, the membership voted and enacted the new policy upon the Board of Directors' recommendations. The new policy took effect on May 6, 2025. A separate policy was also passed at the same time, giving the Board of Directors broader authority for extreme cases, to quickly remove members from our company for particularly egregious acts.
Additionally, we have added a series of training courses that are now mandatory for all staff, members, and officers, regardless of rank or time of service. This training, required annually, is consistent with current standards of Anti-Discrimination and Harassment and will serve us well moving forward. Anyone who may act in a supervisory capacity will also receive enhanced training.
Like any incident we are involved in, whether it is a dispatched emergency or an internal matter, there is always a time for reflection and examination of how we can improve. These changes will enhance our membership and staff. Our mission has remained unchanged since the company's formation in 1937: to serve the community with Honor, Respect, and Valor. We are committed to upholding that promise!
