Millville Volunteer Fire Company responded to a second Residential Structure Fire today on Lathbury Ct, in the Lord Baltimore Landing neighborhood, at approximately 2:55 p.m., (5/30/2026), with reports of smoke coming from the home from multiple callers. Units arrived at a two-story residence with heavy fire coming from the rear of the home and quickly extended to both floors and to the front of the home. MVFC, along with Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company, Roxana Volunteer Fire Company, Dagsboro Volunteer Fire Company, and Frankford Volunteer Fire Company, began fire suppression efforts immediately, attacking and knocking down the exterior fire on the rear of the structure while crews prepared to enter from the front of the home. Primary search and secondary search of the home found no occupants. Crews conducting the interior search and fire suppression were subjected to severe heat and fire conditions while working in very poor visibility. Crews worked on the first and second floors of the interior to control the fire.
Fire suppression activities continued for approximately an hour to get this fire under control. Crews were on scene for several hours overall. The occupants were out of town, and a neighbor tending to their dog was accounted for and safe, including the dog. One firefighter sustained injuries and was checked out at a local hospital and later released.
There was significant damage to the home's interior and exterior, as shown in the pictures. Thank you to the crews from the Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company for providing coverage for our district and staging at MVFC Station 1 during the incident. The incident was under the command of MVFC Asst. Chief Hess upon his arrival. MFVC and our mutual aid partners worked seamlessly together to put out this fire. Rehab for the firefighters was provided by several EMS crews, including the Sussex County Medics. Scene control was provided by the Fire Police, who kept the scene secure and safe. The Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
