Propane Leak - South Hampton Development

December 03, 2006

On Sunday evening 12/03, the MVFC was alerted for a Gas Leak at the South Hampton Development in Southern Ocean View. Units arrived to find a strong odor of gas at the tank farm which supplies the development. Chief 84 (Temple) established Command and assigned Deputy 84 (Magee) with the operations. E84-6 secured its own water supply and deployed an 1-3/4" attack line. 84-4 with FF Dustin Crago in charge secured their own water source, deployed an additional 1-3/4" handline and started evacuation of several houses near the tanks. 1st Asst. Chief Scott as crew leader advanced both attack lines into the tank farm and secured two valves that fed propane into a vaporizer which isolated and stopped the leak. Pep Up arrived on scene and evaluated the problem and confirmed that there were no more hazards. Units picked up their lines and were placed in service. Station 70 assigned one engine as a cover up to Station 84 while the incident was being managed.
